The Australian car component manufacturer Johnson Matthey yesterday said that exports had reached the $100 million mark, less than a year after they began.

The company, a subsidiary of Johnson Matthey of Britain, makes exhaust scrubbers, which use catalysts to reduce vehicle emissions.

Mr Denis O'Hagan, the managing director of Johnson Matthey in Australia, said: ``We have orders for $400 million and expect to announce a further substantial order next year The most recent export contract was for $50 million over five years to Jaguar Cars in England.

General Motors in the United States had issued a complaint against Johnson Matthey in Britain, the US and Australia, saying the content of the converters was not what it expected, Mr O'Hagan said. Johnson Matthey was disputing the complaint and had asked for details.

``I do not have a contract with them," he said.

Mr O'Hagan said he was planning a further expansion of the Sydney plant's production, with the possible introduction of a second shift.

A $2 million extension of the Australian subsidiary's plant was opened yesterday by the Minister for Industry, Mr Griffiths.
